Melanoma Surgery – Day 5
It’s been 5 days after my melanoma surgery and today I got my stitches out. My face looks a lot better and if you look at the picture closely you can see quite a bit of yellow brusing around my ear and neck.
After taking the stitches out the nurse cleaned the area and put some sterile strips on the wound to give it support. I have to keep these on for three more days then I can remove them and start applying the Neosporin.
They did a pathology report on the excision and it turns out that the melanoma was deeper than previously reported. Orginally my melanoma was .70mm deep, but the section they took out during surgery was found to be 1.20mm deep. The surgeon cut out a thickness of 7mm more than 5 times the depth of the melanoma.
I have to go back to the Moffit Cancer Center in one month for a check up to make sure everything is going according to plan.
The nurse told me that a reoccurrence is possible and if it does reocurr it usually happens in the same location as the orginal melanoma, but it doesn’t manifest itself in the same way. It usally causes some sort of lump under the skin or in the lymph nodes.
I’m going to have to keep a watchful eye on the area for some time and hope it doesn’t return.

Wow, that looks like it’s going to be a big scar. For what seemed to be just a pimple. How did you know it was Melanoma?

OV,
My dermatologist took a biopsy and sent it to a lab where it was determined to be a melanoma.
Yeah, it doesn’t look like much, but that bugger would have killed me. I’m not out of the woods yet and have to be very mindful of the area.
They had to take out a full 1cm margin around the melanoma. The hole they cut into my face was 2.5cm in diameter (about a silver dollar in size). To fill in the hole they cut out they have to pull skin from other areas and that’s the reason for the large scar.
