Melanoma Surgery – Day 27

It’s been almost a month after my melanoma surgery and I think I’m healing well. I don’t have anything to gauge this against, but my gut feeling is things are moving along nicely.

I haven’t experienced any shooting pains whatsoever, my bruising is gone and the tightness in my neck and face lessens with each passing day.

I started using Mederma since my dermatologist appointment last week and for the first 3 to 4 days my scar itched terribly. Mederma can cause excessive itchiness for some people, but I read online that the itchiness was an indication that the gel was working. I felt that my itching was tolerable and kept applying it and massaging the scar area. If the itching is too serve you are too cease using the product immediately.

You can’t tell from my photographs, but along the tail end of my scar (located near my jaw) there was excessive uneven skin. It was very “bumpy” and I think this was the result of rotating the skin a bit too much without enough stitches. I also had another raised area at the top of the scar that looked like a keloid, but I think it was just a case of scar hypertrophy. Anyway, this was cause for concern so I researched online and found that many people have used silicone pads to help smooth and soften new and existing scars.

So being the genius that I am I decided to try and use both products together. For the past 5 days I’ve been applying the Mederma, letting it dry, then placing a silicone patch over the “bumpy” areas of my scar. The silicone pads just stick to wherever you put them and need to stay on for long periods of time (months) to be effective. The funny thing about using silicone to treat scars is that nobody knows why they work. They just do. Another benefit to wearing the silicone patch is that it protects my scar from the sun. Bonus!

So after just five days of doing my double whammy scar treatment my “bumpy” areas have almost disappeared! Now, I don’t know if this would of happened if I didn’t use the silicone patch, but the change has been too dramatic to discount the new treatment protocol I’ve developed and implemented.

I’ve been telling everybody I’m Harry Potter’s brother and my scar is the result of my dealings with an evil wizard. Do you think I could pass for Harry’s brother? ;)
